Tara Johnson wins 96th State Assembly primary

VERNON COUNTY, Wis. (WKBT) -- Tara Johnson has won the 96th Assembly District Democratic primary.

Johnson will run against incumbent Republican Loren Oldenburg in November.

She beat Steve Campbell with more than 50 percent of vote and says her decision to run came primarily from her accomplishments as chair of the La Crosse County Board.

During her time on the board, she credits herself with keeping taxes among the lowest in Wisconsin and allocating over $400,000 in funds for mental health and substance abuse services accomplishments. "I feel great about this primary because the new maps really made this part of Wisconsin a Democratic district and that is a huge positive shift for everyone who lives in the 96th Assembly District," Johnson said. Prior to the drawing of the new maps, the 96th favored Republican voters. Johnson says her priority is public education funding.
