Walz surprises Wisconsin's delegation at DNC, Democratic leaders express excitement for Harris-Walz ticket
1 day ago
CHICAGO (WKBT) -- On Monday, Wisconsin's delegation got a VIP treatment with VP nominee Tim Walz surprising them bright and early, along with other top Democrats who are pushing that winning the white house means winning Wisconsin.
Walz swung by to thank delegates for knocking on doors and answering phones relentlessly since the end of July. Others joining him--Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Maryland Governor Wes Moore, New York Governor Kathy Hochul and Michigan Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist.
And for all of them, the message was clear--the path to Washington runs through the badger state, and it'll take everyone to sprint to the finish.
"I'm not waking up the day after this election and not thinking we left it all on the field. We're going to leave it all on the field. We're going to knock every door that needs to be knocked. We've got 78 days of hard work. We can sleep when we're dead," said Walz.
There's a sense of excitement among Wisconsin Democrats at the DNC, and it's a result of President Biden stepping aside for Kamala Harris.
President Biden is giving the keynote address for Monday's opening night, as he'll essentially hand the keys off to Harris. It will be a balancing act between acknowledging Biden's service, but to also move forward with Harris.
"He's a great president. I know him well and I consider him a friend. In fact, I think Joe Biden could have won Wisconsin. I'm not saying he could've won the country, but his work on infrastructure has been amazing," said Gov. Tony Evers.
"I think what the American people have seen over the last month is what I've seen in the meetings I've had with [Harris]. She's somebody who's engaged on the issues, she cares deeply about people and making a positive impact, and she's really personable. She's friendly, she's outgoing," said Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul.
News 8 Now members have heard Wisconsin's delegation is "jazzed as hell" about the Harris-Walz ticket.
According to a Monmouth University poll, in June, Democratic voter enthusiasm for Biden was 46%. Now for Harris, it's 85%.
