Morning showers and t-storms...some severe; otherwise, not as hot and humid on Tuesday

W H AT WE ARE TRACKING: ALERT DAY conditions continue through Tuesday's morning commute for possible severe thunderstorms.  Cooler and less humid conditions arrive by Wednesday.

NEXT 24 HRS: The first round of thunderstorms continues to track quickly eastward along or north of I-90 with the potential for damaging winds.  Once these storms depart the area to the east after 1 AM, another round is expected to develop along or north of I-90 in Southwester, MN, late tonight.  If this line of storms holds together as it lifts northeast, we could see damaging winds and brief heavy rainfall just after the morning commute.  This round's main area of concern is north of I-90, with the highest severe threat along or north of I-94.  Once the activity diminishes or pushes east Tuesday morning, very warm temperatures remain as the cold fronts slowly sag southeast.  Although some showers and thunderstorms are possible Tuesday afternoon or evening, this threat looks primarily south or northeast of the region. Overall, it'll be slightly less hot and humid on Tuesday with high temperatures in the middle 80s to around 90 degrees (heat index values in the low to middle 90s).

LOOKING AHEAD: Warm conditions on Wednesday before a strong cold front moves through late on Thursday as the upper level flow turns more northwesterly.  This northwesterly flow continues through the Labor Day Weekend, resulting in another cold frontal passage on Sunday.  Altogether, high temperatures fall back to seasonable levels (middle 70s to 80) for the start of the Labor Day weekend to below average by Labor Day (upper 60s to middle 70s).  Although rain chances look almost nonexistent with the second cold front, showers and thunderstorms are likely with the first one (Thursday and Thursday).  Some severe storms are possible with the first front, depending on the timing of the front.  Near or slightly below average temperatures (70s) expected for the rest of next week under quiet conditions.
