State officials give safety reminders ahead of Labor Day weekend travel

SPARTA, Wis. (WKBT) -- Wisconsin's Department of Transportation is reminding people to be safe when hitting the roads during this Labor Day weekend.

Widely seen as the last major weekend of summer, travelers are sure to be taking advantage of having Monday off to head out of town.

Senior Trooper Matt Chambers with Wisconsin's State Patrol said they're already seeing an increase in traffic.

He said with construction projects happening all over the region, state patrol is asking drivers to slow down and plan ahead.

"The uptick in traffic as well during that time kind of bogs things up so definitely maybe think about leaving early, you know, giving yourself time to get there so you're not in a hurry," Chambers said.

In a release, Wisconsin's DOT said there will be significant road construction projects in Eau Claire, Jackson and Monroe counties to look out for.

With this weekend being one of the last chances to get out on the water, Chambers said to be extra careful when moving your boat.

"I know a lot of people are going to try and get out to the lake and rivers. Make sure when you're leaving that your boat's secure and everything is hooked up the way it needs to be, lights and everything."

He also emphasized the importance of practicing simple safety measures like wearing your seat belt.

Of course, Chambers expects people to have fun during their holiday weekend but is giving a reminder to not drink and drive.

"If you drink stay home or stay on the boat, get a ride."
