Legislature to audit DNR fish and wildlife account

MADISON (WKBT) -- Wisconsin lawmakers will audit the DNR's fish and wildlife account over a looming financial deficit.

The Legislature's audit committee approved the audit on party lines this week.

The DNR has said the state's fish and wildlife account faces a $16 million deficit by 2026.

In a statement, Green Bay State Sen. Eric Wimberger (R) said the audit will analyze DNR expenses and whether funds were used on things to benefit hunters and anglers.

The DNR's budget chief has said license fees make up most of the account's revenue, but while inflation has risen 59 percent since 2005, license fees have stayed flat.
