    Week Without Driving La Crosse

LA CROSSE (WKBT) -- La Crosse organizations are challenging the public to partake in national "Week without Driving."

The initiative begins Monday and continues until Saturday, October 6th.

Twenty La Crosse area groups are hosting events throughout the week to highlight the challenges of non-drivers who make-up 40% of La Crosse residents ages 15 and up.

Walking, biking and the use of public transportation is encouraged as a way to cut expenses and reduce carbon footprints.

Elected leaders and advocates are also invited to experience the challenges non-drivers meet on a day-to-day basis.

"Where people live and where they work is part of that challenge, and that's something that the county and the city can be mindful of going forward. Where are we citing housing? Is it near transit or is it near services and jobs? Is it way the heck out so that the only place to get anywhere is to drive," says Cathy Van Maren, volunteer for La Crosse Area Transit Advocates.

The city is offering several ways to get around for free this week, including free MTU bus rides and a free ride with a promo code for Drift Cycles.
