La Crosse Fire Department educates students on fire safety

LA CROSSE (WKBT) -- The La Crosse Fire Department visited Spence Elementary School for Fire Prevention Week on Wednesday.

Students learned how to create an escape plan in case of a fire and the importance of smoke alarms.

The community risk educator emphasized being prepared for fires can make them less frightening.

"We practice drills at school; they're not scary. You can practice at home. Fire safety doesn't have to be a scary concept if you know what to do and you have a plan, it's not so scary," said Molly McCormick.

This visit is part of a series of Fire Prevention Week events that will continue until Saturday.
