Holmen football looking for improvement with the help from a large senior class

The Holmen Vikings are looking to get back on track as the 2024 WIAA season gets underway on August 23rd.

Last season, the Vikings finished the regular season just 3-6, but managed to get a little playoff experience before they fell in the first level of the D2 playoffs.

This year, Holmen is loaded with upperclassman. 22 seniors, with most of them being apart of the program their whole lives.

Its one of the more experienced groups that coach Travis Kowalski has had and the connection is paying dividends.

"Oh, it's super beneficial. I mean, we've built a really good connection between each other. And that connection I feel like will help us carry that through into the games. And in the postseason," said senior offensive lineman, Weston Schott.

"It's amazing. You just see how they grow up and how, everyone changes, but you still love each other to this day. And even playing with each other in, our backyards and, youth football teams, we still have that connection," said senior defensive back, Jaren Nygren.

Holmen hasn't won the MVC since 2018 and have been looked at as underdogs in recent years, a feeling that the team is using as fuel.

"We're one of the few teams that nobody really put on the watch list this year, and we're we're kind of the the underdog story or the underdog role this year. And our guys are relishing in that. So I'm excited to get this season going," said Holmen head coach, Travis Kowalski.

"We we know what we were last year, but not everybody knows what we are this year. So this is a different team. But we we have a lot of young guys and we know that we can improve and we can we'll be that underdog and we'll prove people that we are not taken for granted," said Nygren.

The Vikings will open up the season next Friday, August 23rd when they host Medford.
