Meet Our Creator of the Month: David Heitz

Our Creator of the Month series shines a spotlight on the amazing writers and video producers who make NewsBreak the vibrant space it is today.

June’s Creator of the Month is David Heitz who is based in Denver, CO. He was among the first writers to join the NewsBreak Creator Program at the end of 2020. Since then, he has gained a following of 3K+ readers and shared nearly 300 stories. Read on to learn more about David and his NewsBreak journey.

What’s your favorite part about writing for NewsBreak?

It is fun for me to cover local news, as I was in the local news business for 30 years. In 1997-98, I was in charge of the Glendale, Burbank and Foothill editions delivered daily with the Los Angeles Times. We were growing at warp speed but it was so fun. This sort of reminds me of that.

Why did you apply to become a NewsBreak Creator?

My friend Rose Bak told me about the program. I was writing branded content for some rehab centers and took NewsBreak on as a second gig. I ended up quitting the branded content gig to focus on NewsBreak and I don't regret it.

What advice would you give to other creators who want to be successful on NewsBreak?

My advice would be to learn the basics of working a beat. Attend council meetings. Join online groups of community organizations. Get put on mailing lists. Talk to people during the normal course of your day about local news. You would be surprised the fun story ideas that you get.

What do you do when you're not reporting?

Honestly I work quite a lot. I enjoy walking in the beautiful park down the street from where I live. I also enjoy listening to Amazon Music.

Anything else you want to share?

I love it when stories go viral! I sit glued to my computer refreshing the page.
