Juneteenth is officially a federal holiday, Juneteenth National Independence Day. When President Biden signed the legislation on June 17, it became the first national holiday established since Martin Luther King’s Birthday in 1983.

Juneteenth celebrates the announcement of the Emancipation Proclamation to enslaved Americans in Texas on June 19, 1865. During the signing of legislation on Thursday, the President said, “Juneteenth marks both the long, hard night of slavery and subjugation, and a promise of a brighter morning to come. This is a day of profound — in my view — profound weight and profound power.”

While Juneteenth is now being recognized on a national level, each state is celebrating in different ways.
