The session opened with introductions followed by a moderated discussion all about where to find local stories, working with publicists, planning a content calendar, utilizing social media, and building a successful freelance career. Attendees were invited to submit Live Q&A throughout the event, as well.

    Some key takeaways included:

    • Stumped on your next story idea? Let your curiosity fuel you. What are you interested in finding out more about? Follow that instinct and send those pitches!
    • Social media can be a great avenue for finding new leads and creating meaningful connections within your community.
    • Publicists are often the gatekeepers for food and travel stories. Find contact information on websites and/or call PR agencies directly to be put on media lists. Always be kind to contacts and follow up with the stories that you produce.
    • Otter.ai is a helpful tool for transcribing interviews. Apps like TapeACall can also assist with recording.
    • Many great writers are also great readers. Crack open those books!
