It tends to be run really well and go very smoothly. We have great volunteers. That’s one thing I like is just putting on a track meet that people want to come to.”Some teams that competed in the CLA Invite do not have an actual track to practice on at their schools. Weber, a QHS graduate, makes sure his athletes understand how fortunate they are to have a facility that includes a video board, where spectators can watch the track races.“I always remind them of that,” Weber said. “I think they understand that we have a pretty amazing track and field that we get to practice on every day.”The Quincy boys scored 61 team points to finish fifth out of 17 squads. They performed particularly well on the track. Sophomores Alejandro Birrueta and Sergio Esparza finished first and second in the 800 meters with times of 2:06.50 and 2:07.22 respectively.Jayden Richards placed second in the 200-meter run with a time of 23.48 seconds.Anthony Averill took fourth in the 400 meters with a 57.56.Richards, Averill, Birrueta and Esparza combined to take second in the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:40.69.The Lady Jacks finished ninth out of 16 teams with 29 points.In the 100-meter dash, freshman Addison Compton placed fifth with a personal record of 13.52 seconds. She continued her solid first season with an eight-place finish in the 200-meters (28.72) and a ninth-place showing in the long jump with a distance of 14’5.25”.Shea Heikes finished fourth in the 100-meter hurdles at 17.32, a PR. She also placed seventh in the triple jump with a leap of 30’6.75”.In the javelin, Dashka Schaapman finished eighth with a throw of 26’9”, and Kallie Kooistra finished just behind her in ninth with a PR of 26’65”. She also placed fifth in the discus with a toss of 95’5”.Isabella Thompson placed sixth in the high jump with a 4’6” jump. She tied for third in the pole vault with a 6’6” jump.Through all the different events he teaches, Weber tries to bring a realistic, positive approach. He preaches against his athletes getting too down on themselves after a scratch or a disappointing performance.“I had those days as an athlete, and sometimes there isn’t a rhyme or a reason to it. It just happens,” he said. “There’s a chance that it’s going to throw them off even subtly, and we don’t want that, so I try to keep a positive attitude and talk to them about, ‘Hey. Sometimes things do not go our way, and that’s how life goes. Life is not perfect, so we can’t expect that.’”The first-place team was Cashmere among the boys teams and the girls teams.The Jackrabbits’ next meet will be the Connell Invitational on Friday, April 26.The Caribou Trail League Championship meet will be held at Quincy starting at 4 p.m. May 8.</div></body>
