(WSAW) - In July last year, electronic pitch communications were made legal in high school baseball. At first, SPASH Head Coach Kraig Terpstra was skeptical.“I looked into the prices and it was $1,800,” says Terpstra. “And I’m like, ‘we can spend money better ways.’”After hearing some not-so-nice news from last year’s state experience, he new change was needed.“We heard wind that at the state tournament, our signs were being stolen,” says Terpstra. “And I just thought, ‘better to be proactive than reactive.’”While by no means perfect, it has made significant strides in communication between the mound and behind the plate.“It’s easier to get information across when it comes to bunts and first and third plays,” says SPASH Junior Catcher Adam Noskowiak. “Just makes it quicker and it’s easier, we can communicate a lot more instead of having to go out and talk to each other and stuff.”“For example, we got an 0-2 pitch, you don’t want to set up right on the outside corner,” says SPASH Senior Pitcher Noah Marschke. “That’s when Coach Roman or Coach Terpstra can chime in and say, ‘hey, set up maybe six inches off the plate.’ And he can be in that perfect spot and I know exactly where to throw it.”Not to mention a positive impact on the skipper.“Anything to speed up the game, anything to make coaching easier,” says Terpstra. “We’re supposed to be helping the guys, and anything that can do that, I’m 100% for.”With electronics assisting an already-dominant 23-2 squad, it’s just icing on the cake for the Panthers.“It’s nothing new to us and something we take a lot of pride in,” says Marschke. “We didn’t expect anything less, especially from a group of guys that work this hard.”</div></body>
