I worked as a Community Manager for a 135 unit community. The day I started tenants began asking when the elevator would be repaired. I asked how long it had been broken. They said 4 years! There was a disabled tenant with lymphodema would had been walking with crutches up the stairs to the 4th floor all 4 of those years! She had never been offered a reasonable accommodation. I found out from the owners that a electrical in the elevator caused it to be down. I explained to them that the have to get it repaired. It's unacceptable. The owners finally did the repairs and the residents were so happy plus I was able to increase occupancy from 70% to 99.8% in less than 6 months after repairs. I was stunned that no one had reported the owners. They were afraid to speak, thinking they would be evicted.

They need this in all of Alameda County. My elderly Dad and stepmom live in San Leandro and the elevator is always broken where they live, sometimes for weeks.
