The Frances Fleet in Point Judith is still offering both full and half-day fishing trips, where customers target a mixed bag of fluke, black sea bass, and scup. Other species such as bluefish, striped bass, and mackerel will often also make an appearance. They have been seeing improved results, including a couple of very strong trips last weekend. They nearly sold out the weekend and had some great weather. The full day trips continued to see some of the more consistent fluke fishing in a while, and the number of quality sea bass in the mix continues to improve as well. The half day trips were alive with black gold. Sea bass of all sizes came over the rail with regularity, and they also had a nice showing of red hake. A fishing-themed social media site on Saturday shared a “throwback” image showing an angler posing with the head of a large yellowfin tuna.
BDOutdoors’ Instagram description was somewhat predictable: “Paying his dues to the local taxman,” followed by a shark emoji.
The image was captured at Mexico’s Guadalupe Island before the designated biosphere reserve was ordered closed to sportfishing and commercial shark diving.
The taxman, undoubtedly, was a great white shark.

Guadalupe Island, 160 miles west of Ensenada, is seasonal home to dozens of great white sharks.
When long-range sportfishing vessels from San Diego were allowed to fish at Guadalupe, tuna were routinely snatched from hooks before they could be reeled to the boats.

New radio calls revealed a play-by-play of the aftermath of the shocking moment a “pissed off” humpback whale tipped over a small fishing boat.

We finally have some east winds but unfortunately that’s associated with tropical system Debby moving up the east coast. Fluke fishing has been sub-par for most, but when anglers can find warmer pockets in the ocean some keepers are showing. Sea bass fishing remains excellent as the water temperatures have been in the low 60s at a large portion of the reef and wreck sites. Tog fishing began last week and most of the shops are reporting excellent numbers off the inlet rocks, jetties, and some of the Southern Jersey bridges. Although it’s been a rough go lately with higher winds and seas, the canyons are popping with yellowfin, mahi, and even some marlin. I heard of a few local charters getting action from blue and white marlin. The surf and back bays have a good influx of croakers, kingfish, and some blowfish showing up.
