The numbers are in, revealing that the Borderlands movie’s opening weekend has been a flop, debuting in 4th place behind Twisters. The Borderlands movie made its silver screen debut just days ago and the reactions have not been good. Based on nearly 100 reviews, the movie currently holds a 9% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. That makes it the second worst movie of the year. Based on the audience score of 50%, it’s the third worst movie.

The new Borderlands movie opened to abysmal reviews from fans and critics alike. One big complaint is that the PG-13 film lacks the gore and violence found in the M-rated games. However, according to one person involved in the creation of the live-action adaptation, they filmed plenty of gory moments that didn’t make the final cut.

Borderlands is a bomb. Not the bomb, but a bomb, of the explosive variety, blowing through Lionsgate’s hopes and dreams that the film might be a success at the box office. Things were already looking bleak for the film when it debuted on Rotten Tomatoes with a zero percent critics score. In the days since, the score has climbed a little higher to eight percent, which is still… awful. And by all accounts, fans seem to think the same thing as critics, avoiding the film in droves.

After first contact with fans yesterday, critics are somehow even more disappointed with the Borderlands movie. They hate it. They don’t even give it credit as “so bad it’s good.” It is simply, by all appearances, a truly and extremely bad movie. It holds a remarkable 3% approval on aggregator Rotten Tomatoes as of press time. Without further improvement that will place Borderlands at a comfortable midpoint on RT’s 100 worst movies of all time list… and at first place on their Worst Blockbusters of All Time list—below even 2010’s disastrous The Last Airbender.
