When sound arrived in Hollywood, a studio remaking their recent silent hits with a talkie cast wasn’t that unusual. This was especially true for movies that had a lot of dialogue written on cards. People were eager to experience the film without thinking they were reading the book. When director Roland West was able to remake his hit The Bat (1926), he did more than bring a microphone onto the set. He talked United Artists into letting him shoot the film on 65mm for a process known as Magnifilm. Seeing how most theaters in 1930 weren’t equipped to handle the format, the film had to also be released in 35mm. Instead of taking reducing the 65mm to 35mm with a pan and scan, West had a 35mm film camera to capture a second version of the film during the production. For the longest time, people thought the 65mm was lost forever. The film elements were discovered in Mary Pickford’s archive. Pickford was one of the four stars that formed United Artists which is why the actress had them. Making things even more interesting was that Roland West made an alternate 35mm British version of the film that was slightly different from the US release. Roland West’s sound remake comes in three different versions. All are part of The Bat Whispers: Special Edition.

When I was in junior high back in the late ’70s, the English teacher passed out our textbook. I flipped through the book eager to see if the previous user had written something dirty in the margins or left money inside. I was taken back to find the Batman Logo on a page. This wasn’t a bored kid drawing. This was the illustration for the short story “The Joker’s Greatest Triumph” by Donald Barthelme (from 1964). I read the story and was taken back that it wasn’t like Batman comic book or the TV series. There’s Batman talking about smoking Viceroy cigarettes and stashing vodka in the Batmobile. The story showed me that you could do more with a superhero character than mimic their comic book. Naturally my English teacher skipped over this story. But it stuck with me longer than her assigned reading.

🐒 Neon has revealed the first look teaser trailer for a new horror movie called The Monkey, adapted from the Stephen King story of the same name, about one of those super creepy clapping monkey toys. The teaser first debuted in front of Cuckoo showings this weekend before landing online. The Monkey is the very highly anticipated follow-up to this year's massive horror hit Longlegs from mastermind horror director Osgood Perkins. Produced by James Wan, written and directed Perkins, The Monkey is a story about two brothers. The siblings decide to throw the monkey toy away after it starts killing, and try to move on with their lives, growing apart over the years...
