The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) declared the outbreaks a public health emergency of international concern earlier this week, the highest level of alarm possible under international health law, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Cases have risen particularly in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and its neighboring countries, where an outbreak of “Clade I” mpox — a different, more life-threatening strain than “Clade II” mpox, which caused the 2022 outbreak within the U.S. — was first reported last December in the South Kivu province.
