New and old converge on Water Music. Tenor saxophonist Ivo Perelman showcases a quartet with longstanding partner Matthew Shipp on piano together with the fresh rhythm axis of bassist Mark Helias and drummer Tom Rainey. Although they have not played with Perelman before, they are not exactly Johnny-come-latelys. Both have achieved veteran status, not only individually, but also as a team, exemplified by Rainey having fuelled Helias' mighty Open Loose trio since its inception back in the late 1990s.

Ivo Perelman Quartet: Water Music

Among 2024's contenders for the most tireless and ambitious pianists in creative music, one has to put Matt Mitchell near the top of the list. When he is not working as a sideman alongside other pathbreaking musicians like Miles Okazaki, Ches Smith, Darius Jones or Kim Cass, he is busy crafting his own idiosyncratic compositions and assembling the uniquely capable ensembles required to bring them into being. Earlier standout efforts included 2017's A Pouting Grimace (Pi Recordings) and 2019's Phalanx Ambassadors (Pi Recordings), both of which were sprawling, multitextured releases that were consistently imaginative and challenging. And then there was Snark Horse (Pi Recordings, 2021), an even more astonishing collection of music that, despite its six-CD heft, somehow felt as though it was only scratching the surface of Mitchell's capacious vision.

AAJ occasionally publishes reviews which call out the barbarism of digital-only albums (Heart is not one of these, please hang on in there). Item: the review of Brazilian saxophonist and flautist Vinicius Mendes' Macunaismo Tardio Vol. 1&2 (Notes On A Journey, 2024). The two albums collected on that vinyl double-LP, blinders both, were originally released separately as digital-only albums. Unsurprisingly, each failed to make any significant impact on jazz audiences either in Brazil or internationally. It is with great sadness that All About Jazz must announce the death of Dave Binder, better known to millions of readers as John Kelman. Dave died of a heart attack on August 10th, after a long bout of illness. For twenty years Dave was the most internationally renowned of all AAJ's contributors, penning over 2,700 articles which racked up tens of millions of page views. As senior editor for many years, Dave was a guide and mentor to numerous contributors, many of whom became his friends. His unparalleled knowledge of this music, his boundless enthusiasm and his gracious, generous manner with all comers made him a pillar of our community. The esteem in which he was held by musicians around the world speaks volumes for his importance as a tastemaker. AAJ has lost a truly fine ambassador. The music has lost one of its greatest advocates.
