Cases have risen particularly in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and its neighboring countries, where an outbreak of “Clade I” mpox — a different, more life-threatening strain than “Clade II” mpox, which caused the 2022 outbreak within the U.S. — was first reported last December in the South Kivu province.
