What more is there to say about the 2024 season and injuries for the Atlanta Braves. It is unfortunate to report that the team has sustained another significant injury. Austin Riley, will be sidelined for an estimated six to eight weeks due to a right hand fracture. The incident occurred during the first inning of Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Angels when Riley was struck in the right hand. Although he initially remained in the game, he was replaced by Luke Williams in the bottom of the first inning. Despite this setback, the Braves managed to secure a 3-1 victory on Sunday.

Dominguez (3-3) allowed one run on one hit and struck out one in one-third of an inning to take the loss versus the Mets on Monday. Dominguez was called on to keep the game tied at 3-3 in the ninth inning, but he allowed a one-out solo home run to Francisco Alvarez. This was the second outing in a row in which Dominguez has given up a run after previously posting a five-inning scoreless streak. For the season, he's now at a 4.24 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 54:15 K:BB over 46.2 innings while adding four saves and five holds. Dominguez has emerged as manager Brandon Hyde's top closing option this month, but his grip on that role is tenuous even with Craig Kimbrel struggling. Yennier Cano and Cionel Perez are also options to see late-inning work.

ATLANTA (AP) — Marcell Ozuna homered and Reynaldo López pitched five strong innings in his return from the injured list, leading the Atlanta Braves to a 3-1 win over the NL East-leading Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday night. In the opener of a crucial three-game series, the six-time reigning division champs pulled within six games of Philadelphia. The rivals will meet six more times over the next 12 games, a stretch that gives the depleted Braves a chance to further close the gap. “For sure, this is a playoff game for us,” Ozuna said.  Ozuna and López provided a huge lift for Atlanta, which learned a day earlier that slugging third baseman Austin Riley will miss at least the rest of the regular season with a broken hand.

I thought Michael Kopech would get a chance to close out games in LA eventually, but I never saw it happening this quickly. It’s certainly deserved though as Kopech has been dominant since joining the Dodgers. Over his past 15 innings, Kopech holds a 38.8% K-BB, a 18.2% swinging-strike rate, and a 33.5% CSW rate, along with a 0.27 WHIP, 1.38 SIERA, and 1.87 xFIP, all of which rank in the top four amongst active closers over that span. It’s worth keeping in mind though, with Kopech resting last night, Evan Phillips converted his 16th save of the season. Phillips hit a rough patch in July, but over his past 7.1 innings he holds a 42.3% K-BB and a 36.4% CSW rate, as well as a 1.12 xFIP while not allowing any earned runs. I still like Kopech as the “closer” and Phillips as the “high leverage” arm, but both can be (and probably should be) rostered in 12-teamers for the time being.
