According to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, the San Francisco Giants have expressed interest in signing veteran catcher Elias Diaz. The news comes right after the team placed starting catcher Patrick Bailey on the injured list with a strained oblique. In Bailey’s absence, San Francisco will turn to Curt Casali and Jakson Reetz behind the plate. However, both offer little offensively and fit best in backup or organizational depth roles. With the Giants clinging to its postseason odds, signing Diaz and hip upside might be necessary to avoid falling out of the National League Wild Card race.

The San Diego Padres have not been immune to the injury bug this season. The team had been without Joe Musgrove for quite some time, and Xander Boagerts was out of the lineup for several weeks with a shoulder injury. More recently, the Friars lost Ha-Seong Kim to the IL as well.

The Padres announced they have selected the contract of infielder Mason McCoy. Infielder Matthew Batten has been optioned to Triple-A El Paso in a corresponding active roster. To open a 40-man spot for McCoy, outfielder Fernando Tatis Jr. was transferred to the 60-day injured list. Tatis has already been on the IL for 60 days, so he can return as soon as he’s healthy. Jeff Sanders of the San Diego Union-Tribune relayed the McCoy and Batten moves on X prior to the official announcement.

While Darvish will rejoin the Padres in San Diego on Friday, he'll still have some hurdles to clear before being lifted from the injured list. Darvish hasn't pitched for the Padres since May 29 after sustaining a left groin strain during the start. He's had his recovery delayed twice, experiencing elbow inflammation right before his expected activation and then going on the restricted list July 6. The 37-year-old has been throwing on his own and even threw a live batting practice session at a San Diego-area high school Aug. 12. It's unclear how close he is to rejoining the rotation.

Philadelphia Phillies utility player Weston Wilson is creating a playing time dilemma with recent performances. In 17 games this season Wilson is batting .362/.380/.660 line three home runs and seven RBI. To add to that, Wilson has a .433 wOBA, 182 wRC+ and a .400 BABIP this season. FanGraphs gives Wilson a 5.2 offensive value this season, which is pretty good for a player who got called up to replace Whit Merrifield who was released on July 12. Wilson has also improved compared to last season by increasing his wRC+, SLG and OPS. Wilson is also hitting the ball harder and producing more barrels this season. Half of the batted balls Wilson has hit this season have been considered hard hit.
