Towards the end of the recording session for “Heart”, I asked Al Foster if he’d be open to playing a few completely improvised things. We had already recorded a lot of standards and, Al being such a fantastic listener and improviser, I wanted to see what would happen without a framework. I wasn’t sure he was going to see yes, but he was down to do it, even though, much to my surprise, he said he had never done it before. He ended up loving it. I had noticed that when warming up for the session, Al played some really great grooves, so for “Lead the Way”, I just asked him to start a groove and we all played off that, hence the title!

Guitarist and bandleader Russell Malone died Aug. 23, while on tour in Japan, after battling end-stage kidney failure. He was 60. Bassist Ron Carter, who was on tour at the time with Malone and pianist Donald Vega in a group called The Golden Striker Trio, issued a statement saying: “Mr. Malone suffered a heart attack upon completion of our performance at Blue Note Tokyo. Donald Vega and I are completing this tour as a duo in respect and honor of the memory of Mr. Malone.”

For a number of years now, some of the most creative and interesting music in Seattle has been coming out of the fairly unassuming Couth Buzzard bookstore on north Greenwood the first Friday of every month. This evening always first features Kenny Mandell's ever novel New World Ensemble followed by an ever changing range of groups. On the first of March, the New World Ensemble was unfortunately missing their usual gifted saxophonist, Mike Connors, who instead was replaced by veteran bassist Danny O'Brien who, before the music began, regaled us early attendees with tales of a number of his encounters with jazz legends. (And, in perhaps his only instruction before they started, Mandell told O'Brien that "their only form is for the songs to be short pieces, about five to six minutes each.")

When a February 2022 gig at John Zorn's experimental showcase The Stone was unexpectedly canceled due to Covid protocol, Wollesen seized the lemon juicer and booked the band into Shahzad Ismaily's famed Figure 8 studio in Brooklyn for the following two days. The session was engineered by Lily Wen and produced by Will Shore, a composer who plays vibes alongside Wollesen in the utopian art-jazz group Užupis. Playing together for the first time ever, Latralarecorded nearly the entire album and its first session together in a flurry of extraordinary first takes. "I love that energy, that first-time feeling," says Wollesen. "I'm a big believer in the early stages of creating something. It's really exciting! You don't know where you're going, but you're playing with incredible musicians so it somehow works." It is a testament to the band's trust in each other and their willingness to embrace spontaneity and imperfection. This approach ensures that every nuance, every spontaneous idea, and every moment of collective inspiration is preserved, providing listeners with an intimate snapshot of a fleeting, yet powerful creative moment.

The saxophone/drums recording by reedist Ingrid Laubrock and percussionist Tom Rainey is as personal as it gets between two working jazz improvisers. The reason may be that Laubrock and Rainey are not just partners in music, but also life partners. Rainey is one of the most in-demand drummers working today. He can be heard in bands led by Ivo Perelman, Tim Berne, Tony Malaby, and Fay Victor. He also leads his ensembles, Tom Rainey Obbligato, and trio, both of which include Laubrock's saxophone. Likewise, Laubrock can be heard in ensemble led by Mary Halvorson, Nate Wooley, Kris Davis, and Anthony Braxton. She leads her own orchestra, octet, septet, a sextet, Anti-House; a quintet Ubatuba; and duos with everyone from Argentinian electronics artist Cecilia Lopez to Japanese pianist Aki Takase.
