It’s nearing the end of August, and, with it, the end of summer. It’s a little hard to believe, at least for me; it feels like it all breezed by so quickly. Nevertheless, as we prepare to move from one season to another, one thing remains consistent: that there will always be new books to look forward to. If you’re familiar with the rhythms of the publishing industry, it won’t come as a surprise that there aren’t as many entries today, which is typical for the end of the summer. But what we do have is very much worth it, particularly if you’re in search of nonfiction, as nonfiction dominates my list today.

The Hawaiian archipelago consists of 137 islands with over seven hundred miles of coastline and eight main islands, seven of which are inhabited. Hawai’i has a long and storied history, from the earliest days of human settlement via Polynesia to its current status as the 50th U.S. state. Hawai’i is believed to have first been settled sometime around 1000 CE and independent chiefdoms on various islands developed over the next several centuries along with population growth and a spiritual, social, and economic culture centered around connections to the land, ocean, and heavens. The first documented contact with Europeans occurred in 1778 with the arrival of British explorer Captain James Cook, which started conflict between European nations and the United States over access to the islands. These interactions also brought new diseases, and by the mid-1800s, over half of the Native Hawaiian population had been wiped out.

In my first attempt to address the subject of my young husband’s suicide, the story I wrote bore no resemblance to the reality of his death, or to my own life. I thought this was what creativity was all about. The best thing about that earliest work was its title, The Child Widow, which was a gift from Philip Roth, my first reader, who awarded it like a gold star when he encouraged me to consider myself a writer. After that false start in 1970 I went on to write other novels. I also tried many other times to write about Tim.
