The Santa Fe Opera has announced that mezzo-soprano Kaylee Nichols has been awarded the 2024 Award of Excellence. In a statement, the mezzo said, “Incredibly humbled to have received the 2024 Award of Excellence from Santa Fe Opera. Thank you Gayletha Nichols and Chandler Johnson for trusting me, supporting me, and getting me out of my head. Thank you to my family and colleagues who helped me with childcare this summer, helping me focus on making art. Thank you to my village and my team who constantly cheers me on from afar. Thank you to the donors and patrons that make these awards possible. Thank you to EVERYONE at The Santa Fe Opera for creating an environment in which I could thrive in my art during such a giant life transition. You will always have a special place in my heart!

The Bach specialist and festival founder received the honorary title on August 25 at a celebration in the Dordogne town of Cherval. He received the honor from the former French ambassador to the Netherlands Bernard de Montferrand and received the award in recognition of his “significant contributions to the arts and literature, in particular, the enrichment of French cultural heritage” through founding the Itinéraire Baroque Festival.

The festival noted that while Valentin Schwarz’s 2022 staging of the four-night “Der Ring des Nibelungen” will be revived for the final time in 2025, 2026 will be “not purely a concert version” of the tetralogy. Spokesman Hubertus Herrmann said “festival head Katharina Wagner will reveal more details next year and there will be a new staging of the Ring in 2028.”

ChamberQUEER and Luna Composition Lab are set to introduce the first volume of works from “The Nebula Project” on Nov. 4, 2024. For each presentation as part of “The Nebula Project,” a minimum of two Luna Lab alums will be commissioned to create new work for ChamberQUEER performers.
