It took two long years, but we've returned to Middle-earth at long last, with the premiere of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2. Prime Video's epic, big-budget series left a lot of major threads when Season 1 wrapped up, with all of Middle-earth and beyond cast into uncertainty, as it was revealed Sauron (Charlie Vickers) isn't actually dead after all, and three of the titular Rings of Power were forged. So where does that leave us now, in Season 2? Kicking off with a three-episode premiere, of course. Let's dive in.

'The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power' Season 2 Episode 1 Recap: The Fellowship of Lindon

The opening scene of the second season of Amazon Prime’s Lord of the Rings series The Rings of Power lingers long after I finish the first episode, through the second, and well after the credits roll on the third. It’s stunning, immediately making me feel like this season could put things back on track and redeem the whole enterprise after its underwhelming debut in 2022. Unfortunately, however, the rest of the first three episodes, which dropped simultaneously on August 29, fail to achieve anything even remotely similar to that scene during their lengthy runtimes, but if you told me the powerful visuals from those first few minutes were a deleted scene from one of Peter Jackson’s beloved films based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s work, I’d believe you.

For all of the impressive fantasy imagery that it had to offer, the first season of Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power proved to be disappointingly empty.
