‘They deal with a lot of crises’: Stresses faced by emergency responders can be dangerous when not addressed

I find it very sad that the people we rely on to be there and come to our aid in crisis situations are so taken for granted. If you have ever seen an accident where someone was badly injured or didn't survive, if you've ever seen a burn victim (human, pet or other animal), if you've been the person to see or intervene in a violent assault - these are all things that once seen, can't be forgotten. When you add in the sounds, smells and action around them, they become vivid memories that can be tripped by completely unrelated things encountered in everyday life. If you know a first responder, give them a "hug" and, if you can, let them know they can talk to you about the icks without freaking you out. Make sure they know they're seen, heard, and appreciated, that they're not alone. It counts more than you know.
