Valley fever nearly vanished 50 years ago in California. So why is it back with a vengeance?

no.. valley fever did not "nearly vanish." the spores have always been in the soil of the central valley, particularly the west side around Huron, Avenal, Coalinga.. it was a disease that affected mostly farmers and farm workers because their work involved digging into and disrupting the soil. there used to be signs out on the west side that warned you that you were entering a "valley fever spore area" and to roll up your windows. once the prisons were built, those signs were removed. that leads to my next point.. population growth into areas that were open fields and farmland is what's driving the increase in cases. more construction and people living in areas where the spores are endemic is the issue, this is not climate change driven .
