Mass layoff: Walgreens Announces Florida warehouse closure and layoffs

    2024-03-18

Walgreens, a leading pharmacy chain in the United States, has officially announced its decision to shut down its distribution center in Orlando, Florida, as part of a broader initiative to streamline operations and enhance business efficiency. This move, detailed in a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notice filed with the state Department of Commerce, will result in the layoffs of 324 employees at the facility located at 2455 Premier Row. The layoffs are scheduled to commence on or about May 17, 2024, marking a significant reduction in the company's workforce in the region.

The notice, issued by the company's senior counsel, emphasizes Walgreens' strategy to bolster business momentum and refine operational practices across its network. Employees affected by the closure in Orlando are expected to receive a 60-day advance notice of their termination, in line with the notification to the state on March 14. Walgreens assures that all affected staff will be compensated fully, along with their benefits, until their official layoff date or resignation, whichever occurs first.

This development is noteworthy as it highlights the absence of union representation among the Orlando employees. This detail is significant against the backdrop of increasing unionization efforts and labor actions within Walgreens' workforce in other parts of the country, where pharmacy staff have highlighted concerns over burnout and safety issues due to heavy workloads.

The closure of the Orlando distribution center is not an isolated incident within the Walgreens' operational footprint. Over the past year, the company has initiated several layoffs, including significant reductions in corporate roles and personnel at other distribution centers in Killingly, Connecticut, and Edwardsville, Illinois
