Georgia's supply chain industry is facing significant changes as multiple companies announce layoffs and closures through the Worker Adjustment Training and Notification Act (WARN). Among the notable announcements is FedEx, which has disclosed plans for a substantial workforce reduction, laying off 326 employees from its Union City facility. This decision comes as part of the company's move to permanently close the site, marking a significant shift in operations to a new location in Jackson, GA.

The FedEx announcement, filed in February and updated on March 19, indicates that the layoffs will occur in two phases, with operations ceasing entirely by June 23. This strategic move, according to FedEx, is in response to a customer's decision to transition its business to another location, necessitating the discontinuation of operations at the Union City facility. While the company has hinted at potential opportunities for reemployment at the new Jackson Facility, the closure of the Union City site is expected to be permanent.

In addition to FedEx, two other companies in the Georgia supply chain sector have also submitted WARN notices, signaling further industry adjustments. Swissport Cargo Services has announced it will lay off 235 workers by March 20, 2024, and Hollingsworth LLC will reduce its workforce by 74 employees by March 19, 2024. These layoffs underscore the broader challenges and restructuring efforts within the supply chain industry in Georgia, affecting a significant number of workers and potentially altering the state's logistics landscape.

FedEx has assured that all affected employees will receive written notice of their layoff and will be compensated with all due wages and benefits through their final day of employment. Furthermore, the company has pledged to provide information about additional FedEx opportunities, both at the Jackson Facility and at other nearby locations, aiming to mitigate the impact on its workforce. However, the company noted that none of the affected employees are part of a collective bargaining unit represented by a union, indicating a direct communication and negotiation process with the individuals impacted.

As these companies navigate the complexities of the supply chain industry, the WARN notices serve as a critical mechanism for ensuring that employees and state officials are adequately informed about significant employment changes. These developments highlight the dynamic nature of the supply chain sector in Georgia and the ongoing need for adaptability and resilience among companies and workers alike.
