Rite Aid is making headlines again, but unfortunately, not for the best reasons. The essential pharmacy chain is closing a staggering 400 stores, a major uptick from the 143 closures initially planned when it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy last October.

The latest news brings the total number of closures to more than 520, which represents about a quarter of Rite Aid’s locations. This decision reflects the ongoing struggles the company is facing amid its bankruptcy proceedings, as reported by TheStreet.

Adding to the company’s woes, Rite Aid recently disclosed a significant data breach. On July 15, they announced that an incident involving unauthorized access to their business systems had compromised some consumers’ personal information. According to their website, an unknown third party impersonated a company employee to access business credentials, which led to the breach.

The compromised data includes names, addresses, dates of birth, and driver’s license numbers or other forms of government-issued IDs from purchases made between June 6, 2017, and July 30, 2018. However, Rite Aid assured that social security numbers, financial information, and patient information were not affected.

The company has been proactive in addressing the issue. They’ve informed affected customers by mail and have opened a dedicated phone line for anyone with concerns. If you’re worried about the breach, you can call their assistance line toll-free at (866) 810-8094, available from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Central Time, Monday through Friday, excluding holidays. This line will be open until October 15, 2024.

As Rite Aid navigates these turbulent waters, both customers and employees are left wondering what’s next for the chain. What are your thoughts on these closures and the recent data breach? Share your opinions below.
