‘Nothing has changed’ with police reform: Ex-LAPD cop

( NewsNation ) — Ten years have passed since Michael Brown was killed at the hands of a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri, but a former Los Angeles police sergeant does not believe that federal police reform policy will stop local officers from committing more acts of violence.

This week, former President Donald Trump said that presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris and running mate Tim Walz are not strict enough when it comes to public safety. Trump claims Harris wants to defund police agencies across the country.

But Cheryl Dorsey , a retired Los Angeles Police Department sergeant, told NewsNation that “nothing has changed” over the past 10 years as efforts to pass meaningful police reform bills in Congress have stalled.

“We’re going to start ticking off 10-year anniversaries for a lot of folks who lost their lives at the hands of errant police officers,” Dorsey said in a Friday appearance on “NewsNation Now”

“Nothing has changed, and I while I don’t say no to any reform activities, what I will say is that folks need to understand, since we’re nearing an election in less than 90 days, is what to ask for.”

Dorsey said federal police reform policies will do nothing to stop local police officers from needlessly killing people of color. Instead, she said, policies need to be passed at the local level and that candidates seeking local office are the ones who should be questioned most.

She said if local officials aren’t willing to hold police administrators’ feet to the fire when it comes to bad actors within local agencies, nothing will change.

However, Dorsey said she is opposed to defunding local police departments because poorer communities are affected the most.

“Defunding the police will only create more problems,” she said.
