Candy sold at Walmart, Target in 17 states recalled for salmonella

( NewsNation ) — Candy sold in 17 states has been recalled with the highest risk level amid a possible salmonella contamination.

Palmer Candy Company in Sioux City, Iowa recalled “white coated confectionary items” due to the possibility of contamination with salmonella in May.

On Aug. 6, the FDA upgraded the designation to “Class I”; the highest category relating to product recalls.

Per the release, the affected products include Palmer Candy’s Munchy Medley, Classic Yogurt Pretzels, Caramel Swirl Pretzel, Zebra Fudge Cookies, Frosted Pretzels, Patriotic Pretzels, among others.

The products were sold at Walmart, Target, Dollar General and HyVee in Alabama, California, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

According to the FDA, there have been no reported illnesses. Production of the aforementioned products have been suspended.

Salmonella can cause fever, stomach pains and/or diarrhea. It is the most common form of food poisoning. It mostly lasts for four to seven days, according to the CDC .
