OXFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — Emergency crews are looking for two people who went missing Sunday after being swept away by floodwaters in Oxford, Connecticut , according to First Selectman George R. Temple.

Temple said one person was inside a car, and the other tried to hold onto a sign when they were swept away. Emergency crews attempted to rescue them, but they remained missing as of Monday morning.

Flooding and storm-related damage were widespread in the Southbury and Oxford areas. Emergency officials rescued several people stranded in vehicles and nearby buildings on Oxford Road.

Crews were able to help several people, including Jason Ingraham, get out of their vehicles.

“The car shut down because it sensed the water, and, unfortunately, I was in the process of backing right out of it,” Ingraham said. “And it wouldn’t have been a big deal, but there’s some interesting things coming down the hill. Somebody lost their entire firewood collection.”

NewsNation affiliate WTNH crews have seen everything from a staircase to a shed to driftwood being swept down the raging, fast-moving river.
