Mountain lion spotted in Utah neighborhood: ‘Stay alert’

LEHI, Utah ( ABC4 ) — Authorities in Lehi are advising residents to take caution on Monday morning, Aug. 26, after a mountain lion was spotted prowling a neighborhood.

The Lehi Police Department shared a video captured on a local home security camera showing the mountain lion walking through the front yard. Another video shows the mountain lion trotting back the other way before disappearing out of frame.

The mountain lion has reportedly been spotted near Woods Drive and then found again at near 800 West and 900 North.

“Please stay alert and keep an eye on your children while they walk to school,” Lehi Police said in a statement on social media. “If possible, drive your children to school until the situation is resolved.”

Residents are also advised to bring any outdoor pets inside as well.

Lehi Police said its officers will be doing extra patrols in the area until the mountain lion is safely captured and relocated. The Division of Wildlife Resources has been notified and is in the area attempting to find the mountain lion.

In the meantime, the public is advised not to approach or run from the mountain lion should it cross their path.

What to do if you encounter a mountain lion

If you find yourself face-to-face with a mountain lion, the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources advises you not to run as it could trigger its natural instinct to chase.

Instead, you should stand up tall, make yourself appear threatening, and talk loudly. If you have any children or pets with you, hold them close.

Next, back away slowly while keeping eye contact with the mountain lion. If it pounces toward you, fight back. DWR previously told ABC4.com to use whatever you have near you to aid in fending off the mountain lion, such as sticks or rocks.
