( NewsNation ) — BMW is recalling more than 12,000 Mini Cooper SE electric models due to a battery issue.

2020–2024 Cooper SE models were produced with battery components that may not have been up to production specifications, Car And Driver reported , citing recall documents.

Documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) cite faults in the battery system that could lead to overheating, which could result in a fire.

The documents also warn that thermal issues can occur, even when the vehicle is stopped and parked.

The solution is taking the car to an authorized dealership and installing a free software update, which includes a diagnostic function that can detect malfunction.

BMW reportedly notified dealers of the issue in August and plans to notify impacted customers on Oct. 7, 2024. Car owners can also contact Mini customer service at 866-275-6464.
