( NewsNation ) — Nevada is a “critical” state for those who want to win the White House in the November election, according to Dustin Olson, a pollster with American Pulse .

He’s not alone in his assessment: U.S. News said Nevada is a “toss-up” in the 2024 presidential election. Candidates who do win the state have won the White House in 10 of the last 12 elections and the Nevada presidential winner has been successful in nearly 90% of elections since 1900, according to Ballotpedia .

“Pretty much most of the ways you look at the map, Nevada is really critical,” Olson said on “NewsNation Live.” “…The math doesn’t work very well without that state.”

The economy is a top issue for Nevada voters, Olson said. This is why, he added, Democrat Kamala Harris and Republican Donald Trump saying they support eliminating taxes on tips was a smart move for both candidates. While Trump accused Harris of copying his policy position, Olson said it was something the Democrat had to do to win a state like Nevada.

“Probably everybody in that state’s happy that no matter what, they’re looking at possibly no tax on tips,” Olson said.
