Melissa Jubane’s accused killer enters not guilty plea

PORTLAND, Ore. ( KOIN ) — The 27-year-old man accused of killing Oregon nurse Melissa Jubane entered a not guilty plea through his lawyer in a Washington County court Monday.

Police arrested Bryce Johnathan Schubert a few days after Jubane, a newlywed bride, was reported missing when she didn’t arrive for her early morning shift at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center near Portland. An “extensive investigation” over those days, and the recovery of Jubane’s remains, led authorities to arrest the man.

Investigators identified Schubert as a neighbor of Jubane, 32, who lived at an apartment complex in Beaverton, Oregon, about eight miles southwest of Portland.

Reasons for the arrest have not yet been made public. However, Schubert faces charges of second-degree murder, first-degree kidnapping and second-degree abuse of a corpse, according to documents.

Schubert did not appear in the courtroom Monday but appeared virtually in a video conference without speaking. Schubert will be held without bail until his next court date set for Tuesday. He will also have a preliminary hearing on Monday, Sept. 16.

A Providence spokesperson told NewsNation affiliate KOIN 6 News that Schubert had been “briefly employed” as a Providence Portland Medical Center nurse from September 2022 to October 2023. But officials also said he had not been employed at Providence St. Vincent, according to the local outlet.
