Apparent assassination attempt: The sheriff of Martin County, Florida , says investigators must assess if the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump was a collaborative effort. At this time, Ryan Routh is the only person to allegedly be involved in the second assassination attempt on the Republican nominee in recent months. “What they need to make sure of, I’m sure they’re going to, is this a conspiracy? Do we actually have the only person involved, or are there other people,” Sheriff William D. Snyder told “NewsNation Live.” Watch the interview >

The suspect: Routh, the man suspected in the apparent assassination attempt targeting Trump, camped outside a Florida golf course with a rifle for nearly 12 hours before a Secret Service agent stopped the potential attack and opened fire, court documents said. Routh did not fire any shots and sped away after the agent who spotted him shot in his direction, officials said. He was later arrested in a neighboring county. Video: Bodycam footage of Martin County officers apprehending Routh shortly after he fled Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, was released Monday. Watch >

The charges: Routh has been charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of firearm with an obliterated serial number. He was taken into custody following a court appearance Monday. In February 2023, Routh self-published a book titled “Ukraine’s Unwinnable War” where he first introduces the notion of a Trump assassination. “You are free to assassinate Trump,” Routh wrote of Iran in the book. Details >

Secret Service: Acting United States Secret Service Director Ronald Rowe called the agency’s response to Sunday’s attempted assassination of Trump “textbook” and praised agents for rising to the challenge of an “unprecedented threat environment.” Rowe also confirmed that advanced protections ordered by President Joe Biden following the first assassination attempt on Trump were in place at the time.
