(FOX40.COM) — California residents now have the option to carry digital identification cards and driver’s licenses through recent updates to Apple and Android technology.

On Friday, Apple announced that California driver’s licenses and state IDs can be added to Apple Wallet using an iPhone or Apple Watch. In addition, some Android users will also have digital access through the Google Play store. The launch is part of a broader rollout of California Department of Motor Vehicle’s mobile driver’s license (mDL) pilot program that launched last year.

Enrollment in the MDL program is free and voluntary, according to the California DMV. The addition of IDs in Wallet for Californians follows the recent launch in Hawaii, Ohio, Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Maryland, Montana, New Mexico, and West Virginia.

How to add digital ID and driver’s license

    • Download the ‘CA DMV Wallet’ app from the Apple App or Google Play store.
    • Launch the app from your smartphone.
    • Log in to your personal MyDMV account or create one .
    • Follow instructions to scan your physical DL or ID card. If you have both a California driver’s license and an ID, you get to choose which to enroll.
    • Once enrollment is completed on the iPhone, an option will become available for Apple Wallet.

The minimum requirement for digital identification on Android is Android 8 or newer. Android 10-based EMUI 10 devices are not supported. For iPhone, the minimum requirement is iPhone 6s or 6s Plus with iOS 14 and newer. For more information visit www.dmv.ca.gov.

That would require a more mindful practice in terms of smartphone health and security. I wonder if people would want the stress of added responsibility. 🤨
