KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. (WNCN) — At least two people died after an airplane crashed while trying to land late Saturday afternoon at the First Flight Airport beside the Wright Brothers National Memorial at the North Carolina Outer Banks, officials said.

The crash was reported around 5 p.m. and involved a single-engine airplane, according to a news release from the National Park Service.

The plane crashed into woods near the airport and then caught fire.

“Multiple passenger fatalities have been confirmed,” officials said in the release.

After the crash, the airport was closed for Saturday night.

The Wright Brothers National Memorial will be closed on Sunday.

The National Transportation Safety Board, an independent federal agency charged with investigating civil aviation accidents in the United States, will investigate the incident.
