( NewsNation ) — Vice President Kamala Harris is campaigning Thursday in Wisconsin, where she will be joined by former Republican Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney .

Harris is headed to Ripon, Wisconsin, which claims the title of birthplace of the Republican Party because it was where a 19th-century gathering of people opposed to the expansion of slavery led to the eventual formation of the Republican Party.

It’s part of an effort to woo independent voters and Republicans who oppose former President Donald Trump ‘s reelection in defiance of the party nomination.

How do Harris and Trump differ on policy?

Harris is expected to praise Cheney for standing up to Trump by serving as vice chair of the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol riots. That role, along with her vote to impeach Trump, lost Cheney her seat in Congress in the 2022 midterms.

Cheney endorsed Harris last month, but the event will be the first time she’s campaigned alongside the vice president.

Her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, has also endorsed Harris , saying voters must put the U.S. Constitution above party loyalty. Trump has dismissed both endorsements.

The Cheneys aren’t the only Republicans to turn away from Trump and his supporters in the GOP, with more than 200 people voicing their support for Harris . That includes more than 200 people who worked for Republicans including former Presidents George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush, late Arizona Sen. John McCain and Utah Sen. Mitt Romney.

Recent polls show an incredibly tight race between the candidates, and if Republican voters are motivated to back Harris despite disagreements on policy, it could make a difference in November.

The event also comes just one day after newly unsealed court records lay out the federal case against Trump for attempting to subvert the 2020 election. The documents include previously unreleased information about Trump’s actions surrounding the election results and the Jan 6. riots.

Trump called the unsealing election interference, repeating his claims that Democrats are using the Justice Department to prosecute him unjustly.

Harris reportedly plans to say that while Republicans may not agree with her platform on all issues, she will be the candidate who upholds the Constitution.
