Illinois man sentenced for fentanyl trafficking, supporting ISIS

( NewsNation ) — A 42-year-old man from a Chicago suburb was sentenced to 18 years in federal prison earlier this month for trafficking fentanyl and attempting to support the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham .

Last year, Jason Brown of Lombard, Ill., pleaded guilty to one count of attempting to provide material support to ISIS, one count of distributing fentanyl and one count of possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Northern District of Illinois.

Brown was arrested in 2019 after making three cash payments of $500 to an individual who he thought was wiring the money to an ISIS soldier in Syria, the press release said. However, both individuals were undercover and working with law enforcement.

That same year, the Lombard resident was caught trafficking fentanyl and other drugs from California to the Chicago suburbs. He was also caught illegally possessing several loaded handguns “in furtherance of his drug trafficking activities.”

Brown was officially sentenced on Oct. 16, 2024, in Chicago.
