The father from New Jersey who made his 6-year-old son run on a treadmill for hours, causing his death, shockingly admitted he didn't kill the child during his sentencing on Friday, receiving a 25-year prison term.
Wearing a green-and-white striped jail outfit, Christopher Gregor made excuses in court before being given the severe punishment for the death of young Corey Micciolo, who was made to run on a treadmill as a form of punishment on March 20, 2021.
The child passed away on April 2.
“I want to assure you that on April 2, I did nothing to cause Corey’s passing,” Gregor said. “I didn’t hurt my son. I loved him and I still do. I regret not bringing him to the hospital sooner. I didn’t know how sick he was. I didn’t know. I just thought he was tired.”
Horrifying footage revealed Gregor ramping up the pace on the treadmill at the Atlantic Heights Clubhouse fitness center, leading Corey to lose his balance and tumble six times, supposedly due to his belief that the child was overweight.
A fortnight after this incident, on April 2, Corey emerged from his sleep feeling sick, disoriented, and slurring his speech.
On the same day, a chilling video captured Gregor transporting the child's injured and weakened body to the Southern Ocean Medical Center in Hackensack just before his passing.
The child “was not showing any signs that he was verbal,” as his head tilted backwards in the examination room, according to testimony from registered nurse William Doyle, who was on duty at the time.
The harm was so serious that Corey experienced a seizure while undergoing a CT scan, leading the medical team to intervene with urgent actions.
However, their efforts were unsuccessful, and the child was declared deceased just before 5 p.m.
An additional examination revealed the child had endured severe blunt force injuries to his chest and abdomen, along with deep cuts to his liver and heart.
In May, Gregor avoided being convicted of murder when a jury determined he was guilty of endangering a child's well-being and causing the death of a child. He was initially facing a sentence of 30 years to life for murder.
Judge Guy Ryan issued the verdict following the mother of the child's request for the most severe penalty.
“He has no remorse for any of the actions he committed. His own remorse is because he got caught and convicted,” the child’s mom, Breanna Micciolo, told the court.
“Everything he had done to Corey was done out of spite to me. Another reason is he is sick in the head and used Corey as his punching bag. He never had an ounce of love for Corey, he was just an inconvenience to his life,” she said.
“I cannot even begin to imagine what my son went through behind closed doors with this man,” she added.
Ryan imposed a 20-year sentence on Gregor for the severe killing of another person and a 5-year term for putting a child in danger. Gregor's defense attorneys argue that the child passed away from an illness, but a healthcare professional discovered that he died from severe physical injuries.
