"Am I the only one tipping 20% every time? I’m already paying $10 for my Mc chicken I’m not tipping ontop of that". Americans have reported feeling like they need to tip more, and more often, than ever before.

“A broad majority of Americans say they’re being asked to tip service workers more frequently than in the past,” reads a report from Pew Research Center. “Around seven-in-ten U.S. adults (72%) say tipping is expected in more places today than it was five years ago.”

This trend has been labeled "tip inflation," and many people in the U.S. have turned to online platforms to voice their dissatisfaction with it. For instance, a user on the internet reported being requested for a tip while operating a self-checkout device. Another individual demonstrated how the recommended tip percentages at a nearby barber shop began at 50%.

Although this perception might reflect the sentiments of Americans regarding the matter, it doesn't automatically imply that employees are receiving increased tips, as illustrated by a TikTok video shared recently.

A pizza delivery driver shares his tips

In his video on TikTok, user Dev (@notdevai) declares, "I'm going to show everyone that tipping isn't as common anymore." To set the scene, Dev is a pizza delivery person who mentions he's on a shift that stretches to 6 and a half hours.

While some customers leave him tips of over 20%, others don't tip at all, or only give tips in the 10 to 11% range. By the end of his shift, he's collected $46 in tips over 6 and a half hours, which translates to about $7.08 in tips per hour.

It's not clear how much Dev makes from his base salary, but according to data, pizza delivery drivers in the U.S. typically earn about $16 per hour, though this figure can vary widely. Considering this, it's safe to say that Dev likely made around $23 per hour, which is below the national average hourly wage of about $35.

If the TikToker is an independent contractor for a service like DoorDash, this payment could be substantially different.

Commenters share their thoughts on tipping

In the comments section, users expressed their views on tipping for delivery services.

“Lol I’m okay tipping like 20-25% but there is also already a delivery charge that’s like 5-7 dollars so I’d happily have that go to the driver instead,” noted a user.

“Am I the only one tipping 20% everytime? I thought we all did that?” questioned another.

“I’m already paying $10 for my Mc chicken I’m not tipping ontop of that,” declared a third.
