    Can they beat the OG?

I'm someone who sticks to routines, particularly when it comes to what I order at fast food places. I stumbled upon Wendy’s 444 special during my college days, and ever since then, the Jr. Cheeseburger with its spicy nuggets, fries, and a soda has been my preferred choice. A McDonald’s Quarter Pounder with Cheese, fries, and a Diet Coke is my go-to McDonald’s combo. And, a Crunchwrap Supreme will always be a Taco Bell essential for me.

Absolutely, I'm always eager to try new things whenever I'm at Taco Bell's drive-thru—it's just too tempting with their constant stream of tasty new items. Yet, no matter what I choose, it always comes with my go-to Crunchwrap Supreme, loaded with meat, cheese sauce, lettuce, tomatoes, sour cream, and a crispy tostada.

As a die-hard Crunchwrap Supreme fan, I can't help but believe the original is unbeatable. Yet, Taco Bell's other Crunchwrap variations have also been popular, particularly the recently beloved Big Cheez-It Crunchwrap Supreme.

So, if you thought the Crunchwrap stuffed with an extra-large Cheez-It cracker was exciting, just wait until you hear about the three new Crunchwrap Supreme options Taco Bell is testing.

Taco Bell Testing 3 New Crunchwrap Supremes

At Taco Bell’s Live Más Live event this past year, the quick-service restaurant launched a fresh initiative named TBX, which involves bringing in expert chefs to the Taco Bell experimental kitchen to develop new culinary creations. Their initial challenge was to revamp the Crunchwrap—and the chefs involved, Reuben Asaram, Jennifer Hwa Dobbertin, and Lawrence “LT” Smith, rose to the occasion.

They came up with three innovative versions of the Crunchwrap Supreme: a Crunchwrap Supreme inspired by Indian Buffet, a Crunchwrap Supreme featuring Crispy Thai Noodles, and a Crunchwrap Supreme with a Southwest Hot CHX twist.

Chef Rueben's Indian Buffet Crunchwrap is packed with chicken tossed in tomato curry, Mexican-infused rice, lettuce, pico de gallo, and a crispy tostada. Chef Jenn's Crispy Thai Noodle Crunchwrap features khao soi aioli-drenched grilled chicken, crispy wheat noodles, sour cream, fresh onions, cilantro, and avocado basil ranch. Lastly, Chef LT's Southwest Hot CHX Crunchwrap includes salsa macha-coated chicken nuggets, Oaxaca-style mozzarella, Monterey Jack, purple cabbage slaw, cilantro, apricot hot sauce, and sour cream.

The three new Crunchwrap Supreme flavors will be on sale at a special two-day pop-up event in New York City on Oct. 16 and 17. Attendees can discover them at Williamsburg (160 North 6th Street) on Oct. 16 from 12-7 p.m. and at Washington Square Park (14 Washington Square North) on Oct. 17 from 12-7 p.m. while they are available.

The two-day test will inform Taco Bell’s decision to bring the Indian Buffet Crunchwrap Supreme, Crispy Thai Noodle Crunchwrap Supreme, and Southwest Hot CHX Crunchwrap Supreme to menus in 2025.

I tried Taco Bell’s three new Crunchwrap Supremes before the pop-up, and here is my honest review.

    Here's My Honest Review

I’ll be honest: I’ve never waited so long for a Crunchwrap Supreme in my entire life. To be fair, I tried the new offerings out of a food truck and not a Taco Bell restaurant, but, if the chain wants to bring these to market, it’ll need to address the cooking and assembly time.

Beyond the delay, the latest Crunchwraps boast a variety of distinctive tastes—and likely not the kind you'd anticipate from Taco Bell.

I'll get straight to the point; the Indian Buffet Crunchwrap Supreme was my least favorite. The spices from Mexico dominate the curry taste, resulting in a more classic Tex-Mex flavor with a subtle Indian spice touch at the end. It's decent, but it didn't deliver the flavor it promised.

Coming in second was the Crispy Thai Noodle Crunchwrap Supreme. The standout flavors in this dish are the avocado basil ranch and the crisp cilantro. The only thing that prevented it from taking the top spot was that my wheat noodles had started to soften by the time I indulged in the Crunchwrap, which resulted in them losing their crunch. Nonetheless, if I had taken a few minutes to wait before eating, the noodles could have retained their crunchiness and been just right.

The new Crunchwrap Supreme that took home gold for me was the Southwest Hot CHX Crunchwrap Supreme. This new offering features Taco Bell’s chicken nuggets, which the brand has been testing throughout this year. These nuggets are delicious on their own—and, side note, need to come to Taco Bell’s menus nationwide—but topped with the salsa, apricot hot sauce, and sour cream, you can’t go wrong.

Although the Southwest tastes weren't as pronounced, I found this Crunchwrap Supreme to be the most satisfying due to its substantial meat content and the appealing cheesiness and crispness from the slaw, which has become a staple in a Crunchwrap for me. It truly captured the essence of Taco Bell and would surely be a favorite for late-night cravings.

The fate of these Crunchwrap Supremes in New York City now rests with Taco Bell enthusiasts. Let's hope you get the chance to taste one of the new Crunchwrap Supremes someday.
