Serving is a challenging role. In addition to standing for long periods, lifting heavy objects, and tidying up, servers also have to handle a variety of tough customers. Although tips can be quite large, the fact that they're not mandatory means that servers often work without knowing how much they'll make for their work that day.

Given these issues and the job’s inconsistent pay, it’s no surprise that restaurants have had difficulties finding and maintaining staff. While the situation isn’t as dire as it was several years ago—restaurant jobs have largely recovered to pre-pandemic levels—no one is sure how stable the current market is, and many have theorized that there could soon be another labor shortage in the industry.

Nonetheless, diners continue to enjoy dining out face-to-face, and eateries are working hard to maintain their patronage. A method some of these restaurants are employing to achieve this is having their waitstaff perform dances.

What’s going on at this Texas Roadhouse?

In a TikTok video that has surpassed 281,000 views, the user Mairis (@mairissd) displays a scene at a Texas Roadhouse restaurant. While country music plays, the waitstaff joins in a dance, with a few showing more excitement than the rest.

“Asked for extra rolls and my server is out here dancing,” she writes in the text overlaying the video.

Seeing servers dance is a common experience at Texas Roadhouse and has been the case since the restaurant’s founding.

In general, servers say participating in these dances is optional, though servers can occasionally be expected to join.
