If you're employed, you might be aware that it's uncommon for colleagues to discuss personal matters at work. Often, sharing too much about your personal life can lead to negative gossip and uncomfortable situations. Consequently, many individuals prefer to keep their personal and professional lives separate, especially when it comes to work-related discussions with their peers and superiors. What should someone do if their supervisor insists on employees sharing personal details, even if they're not keen on it?

u/GrapefruitPrimary453 on Reddit shared their experience with a new manager who seems to be overstepping her boundaries by pressuring her team to divulge personal information. According to the post, this new manager, who joined the team around 6 months ago, has been making an effort to do her job and sometimes believes that sharing personal stories can enhance her team's performance.

The employee has repeatedly expressed to the manager that they are not at ease with discussing personal matters, feelings, or anything unrelated to work. However, things took a sour turn unexpectedly. "During our first one-on-one meeting, we ended up in a heated argument because she accused me of not being open about my personal life in work settings," the post stated. The manager even suggested that the employee's boyfriend might be upset with their reluctance to share personal details.

"In a recent team meeting, she initiated a discussion about our moods and feelings, starting with, 'What's your current mood according to your feelings?' and made everyone answer. Several team members shared that they were feeling down. Then, we were individually asked to discuss our feelings and emotions. The previous manager never made such demands because she recognized that not everyone was comfortable with such disclosures," the narrative continued.

However, one colleague attempted to voice their concerns to the manager, arguing that her approach was inappropriate and would only lead to resentment among the team. Despite this, the manager persisted in her demands, insisting that employees share personal stories. "Then, she asked me to share. I made it clear that I was not willing to participate in such discussions, having previously expressed my discomfort with this approach. I also mentioned that I find it disrespectful when people are forced to speak when they have nothing meaningful to say. She was clearly unhappy with my response. She threatened to have a private conversation with our main manager about my inappropriate conduct," the post concluded.

The worker turned to the Reddit community for guidance on how to handle this complicated situation. u/ABeerAndABook offered advice: "View the interaction with the primary manager as a chance. Approach it calmly and highlight how her leadership approach is causing issues within the department and making employees feel uneasy about sharing personal details. Don't let them twist the situation and be prepared to counter any attempts to do so." u/Banana_Havok commented: "Begin sharing gloomy stories and interrupt the meeting. Invite others to join in. Extend these meetings for as long as possible."

u/Wilgrove questioned: "Why does your boss act like everyone's in elementary school? What's the deal with asking about your feelings based on the weather? Also, unless your personal life directly affects your job, you're not responsible for her. I dislike it when people pressure you into being their friend." u/SurpassingAllKings made a joke: "There's a moment in The Office where everyone in the office acts out scenes from popular movies. You should give that a shot."
