GOP Rep. Nancy Mace Calls Black Men ‘Boys’ After Mispronouncing Kamala Harris’ Name

I n a strong suggestion that Rep. Nancy Mace is being increasingly indoctrinated into the Republican Party’s MAGA mantra, the Congresswoman from South Carolina has doubled down on her dog whistling about Vice President Kamala Harris’ name by resorting to one of the oldest tropes in the history of anti-Black racism — she referred to Black men as “boys.”

Mace has clearly been brushing up on her microaggressions and was ready to display them to the world last week during a CNN panel when she repeatedly mispronounced Harris’ first name, something that critics have said is disrespectful along several fronts, including racially.

When she was promptly — and repeatedly — called out for said mispronunciations by esteemed academic Dr. Michael Eric Dyson and Democratic strategist Keith Boykin, both of whom are Black men, Mace defiantly told them she would pronounce Harris’ name “any way I want.”

The backlash was swift — but not quicker than Mace pinning a video of the exchange to the top of her social media channels, suggesting she was proud of the moment.

Mace defended her misnomering of Harris by deflecting and blaming Dyson and Boykin whom she said “interrupted” her “over 10 times.” She also claimed that Dyson and Boykin correcting her intentional mispronunciation of Harris’ name to be evidence of “the Radical Left who don’t respect women.”

But before she pinned that post to her socials, Mace dog whistled about how she really felt being corrected by two Black men by claiming those “boys were so easily triggered.”

To be sure, referring to a Black man as a “boy” in any situation will pretty much result in accusations of racism toward the person who said it. And that’s for a very good reason: The term has its roots in slavery when Black men were reduced and referred to as a “boy,” a situation that is intrinsically and historically racist.

The fact that Mace is from South Carolina — which at one point had the highest ratio of Black slaves to white colonists in the U.S. — made her comments even more egregious.

Of course, it would be naive to chalk up Mace’s choice of words to ignorance, considering the hateful trajectory of her own political party that has long placed Donald Trump and his racist rhetoric on a pedestal. In fact, in that context, Mace’s words were almost assuredly intentional — both with the mispronunciation of Harris’ first name and then calling accomplished Black men out of their name as “boys.”

And then when you factor in how Mace has previously been slammed for her “ white privilege ,” it’s all but a no-brainer that the Republican Congresswoman from South Carolina intentionally spoke down about and to Black people.

This is America.
