The first day of school in Broward County is complete with more than 250,000 kids back in classrooms, but lines were long at many high schools now that every student must walk through metal detectors.

Schools Superintendent Dr. Howard Hepburn admits there are some kinks that need to be ironed out on their end, but he says this morning some students waited until the last minute to take out items or didn't do it at all and that, "adds a minute to the process. So, we can certainly shave that down. My hopes is to get it down to more than about 20 seconds, 30 seconds per kid, which we can get through thousands of kids through our metal detectors with ease."

Another adjustment for students in all grades, they must power down or put in airplane mode cell phones and other wireless devices unless instructed by teachers.

The superintendent says during a two-week grace period, teachers will remind kids to put away their phones even during lunch. School resumes on Wednesday in Monroe County and Thursday in Miami-Dade.
